The Pills I Couldn’t Swallow

In Feature, Nutrition on
I have shared how this second pregnancy is easier emotionally, but not as perfect nutritionally and physically.

One thing that was hard for me on some days was to take the pre-natal pills. For some reason, it got very unpleasant to swallow them. Since my meals weren’t as perfect and balanced as I wished, I knew I had to be even more mindful with supplements. When we are pregnant, our nutritional needs are so specific that even with a great nutritional plan it’s still essential to supplement with pre-natal vitamins, to make sure mom and baby are getting what they need to grow and develop as healthfully as possible.

Mamas, check your pre-natal supplement labels and talk with your doctor to make sure you are getting all the nutrients you and baby need. Here is a table showing the daily nutritional needs.

However, even knowing the extreme importance of the pre-natal pills, I occasionally skipped them. Just the thought of having to put them in my mouth gave me a pain in the gut. So I asked my doctor what I could take instead. He recommended a pre-natal powdered shake, a liquid iron, and a chewable calcium. Oh! And lots of salmon for Omega 3 (DHA and EPA). Voila! They worked like magic on those days that I just couldn’t take the pills. The fact is that the pre-natal pills are easier, cheaper and usually more complete than the above options. However, having those other options was key to getting the nutrients I needed for a healthy pregnancy.

Cheers to a healthy and joyful pregnancy!
